

VoxLAB Spring Party '21

Vi ønsker hjertelig velkommen til årets vokale musikkteaterfestival VårFEST ‘ 21 fra 24. til og med 26. August!
I år presenterer vi en konsertserie bestående av nye verk fra hele tolv forskjellige komponister på Sentralen, SALT, og MIR.
Tema for VoxLAB VårFEST i år er ”The Extended Voice” - den utvidete stemmen! Stemmen utvidet med ulike former for elektroniske muligheter og programvarer, stemmen brukt på ulike utradisjonelle uttrykksmåter, på utvidede lokaler og med utvidete fortellings midler.
VoxLAB har i den anledning invitert to anerkjente internasjonale vokalister/komponister til å åpne festivalen: Franziska Bauman fra Sveits og Alex Nowitz fra Tyskland. De har Norgespremiere på sine soloverk på Sentralen. Begge kunstnere bidrar med verk for stemme og audio prosessering i sanntid med selvutviklede fjernkontrollere.
Natasha Barrett bidrar med “Altered States: Coastal Waters & A Forest of Their Own” et nytt bestillingsverk for Nordic Voices-sekstetten. Verket har seks solohøyttalere som avatarer, hvor hver sanger er parret med en høyttaler, i tillegg til spatialisering over seks ytterligere høyttalere rundt publikum.
Ruth Wilhelmine Meyer kommer tilbake i år med ”WAYS of BREATH” - et utdrag fra “One Voice Orchestra” som er et helaftens musikkteaterverk under utvikling. Verket er basert på Ruth Wilhelmine Meyers særegne vokale klangverden hvor elektronikken viderefører den organiske stemmens klanglighet.
Kristin Norderval presenterer "Something is Coming" et utdrag fra sin nye opera-i-utvikling “The Sailmaker ́s Wife” for stemme, slagverk og interaktiv elektronisk lyd. Sopran Silje Aker Johnsen og baryton Halvor Melien er vokalsolister, akkompagnert av Sigrun Rogstad Gomnæs og Rob Waring på slagverk.
Idin Mofakham presenterer “Deylamān - for voice and electronics”, et microtonal verk for mezzo-sopran Siv Misund med live electronics.
Trina Colemans sang “I Dream a World”, en tonesetting av Langston Hughes berømte dikt, blir også fremført av Siv Misund.
Tejaswinee Kelkar og Çağrı Erdem med “Two Body Problem” gir innblikk i nyskapninger innen teknologi og fjernkontrollert live audioprosessering.
Visobel Black og Martyna Kosecka søker dekket og skjulte lyder og uttrykk i “Obscurus” for fiolin, synth og stemmer.
Voxlab inviterer til en utvidet versjon av Ann-Helen Schjølbergs verk “Urge Displacement” – en stedsspesifikk musikalsk byvandring som fikk meget god kritikk og respons på VårFEST’ 2020. Arrangementet ender med en konsert hvor Ann-Helen Schjølberg presenterer nyinnspilt musikk inspirert av stykket.

The artists on tonight's program explore the multiple possibilities of altered vocalities. Extending the human voice through real-time electronic processing and multichannel sound diffusion, they create sonic avatars and vocal simulacra to explore space, time and matter.
The program is curated in collaboration with EAU - Electric Audio Unit .
EAU (Electric Audio Unit) is a Norwegian ensemble consisting of composers Anders Vinjar, Natasha Barrett and Anders Tveit. EAU works with the dissemination of electroacoustic music, with a particular focus on multi-channel works, 3D sound and immersive listening experiences. EAU produces concerts, commissions new works by Norwegian and international composers, and organizes workshops.

' Altered States' is a collection of works expressing nature defending itself against human interference, finding a new state in the 'rehumanisation' of the acoustic and electronic voice. 'Altered States I: Coastal Waters' alludes to the connection between the increasingly warmer oceans and native and invasive marine species.
'Altered States II: moves between expressions about the security found in the forest as a home and the forest as a place of inimical power.
'Altered States' was composed for and commissioned by the vocal ensemble Nordic Voices with support from the Norwegian Cultural Council.

Natasha Barrett:
Composer Natasha Barrett specializes in acousmatic and live electroacoustic music, sound and multimedia installations, and interactive technology. The spatial part is particularly important to her approach to composition and since 2000 she has developed new techniques that use 3D sound. Many of her works include performers, visual artists, architects and scientists, and she has won a number of international awards, including the Nordic Council's Music Prize. www.natashabarrett

Natasha Barrett: Live Spatialisation/EAU collaborator
An important part of the vocal artistic project of Ruth Wilhelmine Meyer is to explore the sound's own narrative. In tonight's work, she will explore possible narratives in white noise that contain elements from both breath, wind and spirit - all basic elements of living existence. The work has gained relevance through the last year's shared experiences in the world, where people have been prevented from breathing freely when they have met. What does it do to our bodies, what does it do to the communication between us, and to how we think.
The evening's work is part of the development of the ONE VOICE ORCHESTRA PROJECT, where Ruth Wilhelmine Meyer's distinctive multi-vocal sound world is orchestrated and enters into dialogue with electronics and spatial spatialization of the sound without changing the character of the acoustic voice. In short, an orchestral work for one voice. The electronics therefore carry on the sonority of the acoustic voice.
Ruth Wilhelmine creates ONE VOICE ORCHESTRA PROJECT together with sound artist and co-composer Julian Skar. On the performance of the evening's work for this year's VoxLAB's Spring Festival 2021, Ruth collaborates with the EAU composer Natasha Barrett (EAU) who will spatialize the music in real time. It is the first time Natasha and Ruth Wilhelmine work together.
Bio:
Ruth Wilhelmine Meyer is a distinctive composer and voice artist who has immersed herself in various vocal-sounding expressions. She is inspired by ethnic vocal sounds, classical vocal tradition, Norwegian folk music and extended vocal expressions from the avant-garde tradition as well as various possible vocal technical mutations of these. She has developed a sonorous vocal expression with a voice range of more than 7 octaves. Her polyvocal range of expression makes her sought after for the creation of film and stage music and as a concert singer all over the world and she collaborates with musicians and composers from very different musical genres. She won the Edvard Prize in 2019 in the CHALLENGER category for the production KLANGBIOTOPER. Her commissioned piece for the Telemark Festival in 2019, HAUGEBONDEN, received rave reviews. www.wilhelmine.no

The work Vocal Space Lines was inspired by the Bauhaus artist Oscar Schlemmer, who focused on increasing the performer's awareness of the sense of space and play. By using wireless and gesture-controlled live electronics, and with the help of a custom-built strophonion developed at STEIM in Amsterdam, the composer/performance artist can move freely. The composer writes: "I want to blur the dividing lines between art disciplines, so that the performer can become a sound dancer who strives to make sound visual and understandable. In this way, I create sound sculptures that can measure the spatial dimensions with the help of vocal sounds and their manipulated copies." Vocal Space Lines premiered at the Kunstakademiet in Berlin on 18 January 2019, commissioned by the festival '100 Years of Bauhaus'.
Bio:
Composer Alex Nowitz (PhD) has created works for opera and musical theatre, dance and spoken word theatre, vocal and chamber music, orchestral miniatures and electroacoustic music. He is also a singer (tenor/countertenor), whistler and vocal performance artist who presents a wide range of extended vocal techniques. Expanding the field of vocal performance art, Nowitz uses customized and gesture-controlled live electronics, such as the strophonium and voice kite. At ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) in 2009, Nowitz won first prize for the composition 'Minotaurus' with voice and live electronics with the voice flyer. Nowitz has held several artist fellowship positions, including at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2014, at the Cultural Foundation Schloss Wiepersdorf in 2020, and an upcoming residency at the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles. In 2019, Nowitz received a doctorate in performing and mediating practice with a specialization in opera from Stockholm's Konstnärliga Högskola. www.nowitz.de

"Gravity Pleasures" looks past the physical outer edges of the voice and plays with gravity in our listening habits. The stage and the listening room merge into an imaginary vocal landscape. The listeners sit in the middle of the room, and in the middle of the sounds where the singer Franziska Baumann performs with gesture-controlled live electronics. Field recordings and voice recordings are the basis for the sound material, and the vocal cartography is based on found themes. This results in a musical structure that is staged on the spot with vocal orchestration and vocal performance.
Bio:
Franziska Baumann is an internationally recognized vocalist-performer-composer.
She works in many different fields that include free improvisation, acoustic vocal performance, performance art with live electronics, sound installations and interdisciplinary work. With her four-octave voice, she explores the human voice as a multi-layered instrument that expands traditional boundaries and creates works that cross voice and gesture, space and live electronics, in an attempt to discover and weave together new perspectives.
Franziska's cross-genre exposure to music allows her to work with musicians from different backgrounds. She has toured Europe, the USA, Canada, South Africa, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. A pioneer of digital live techniques, she works to process the voice in real time using a custom sensor glove and Ableton Live and JunXion software on a MacBook Pro. This allows her to control the voice, the sound and the spatial articulations with physical movements in real time.
Franziska has published in research projects such as "Interfaces in Live Performances", "Voice as a Musical Performative Phenomenon" and "Potentials of the Musical in a Linguistic Context".
